Local Enumeration District Route Descriptions in the 1871 Census
This census was taken on the Sunday 2nd April.
Lower Gornal District
1871 Enumeration District: 50 Lower Gornal.
Enumerator: Mr William M. Hughes.
Boundary of Enumeration
Commencing in Duke St Ruiton, at and include the house of Mrs Smith. continue on right hand side into Park St, thence to the right, along Park St round by David Williams Shop (which include) and continue onward on right hand side (only) to the bottom of Holloway St taking in all houses on that side of the route including those in Holloway Square, Ellowes Row, Ellowes Hall, then take Barrow's Farm House and the 6 houses in the Fold where Emma Southalls' is situated also a house near boundary wall close to road leading to Barrow's Farm House, all the houses in Ruiton Street commencing at No 1 and ending at Mr Charles Hughes's Butcher (both inclusive) also take in the Houses in Furlong Walk.

Boundary of Enumeration
Commence at Cornelius Cartwrights house in Coseley Road, and continue to No. 29 (which include) in that Street, thence to Mr James Marsh's (which include) along Lake Street to No 54 (which include) also include Joseph Waterfields, Mr E.P.Cartwrights residence, thence to Church Street from No 1 to 24 (both include) also take in Vicarage House, thence to Humphrey St from 1 to 35 (both inclusive) thence to Turner Street from 1 to 28 both inclusive thence to St James St, from 1 to 6 both inclusive, include all back houses.

'Coseley Road' I assume was Robert Street, before being named as such.

Boundary of Enumeration
Commence at Cooks house to No 6 Deepdale Bank which include, also the Cottage there belonging to Earl Dudley, taking houses on both sides until reaching Grave Yard Road where continue taking houses on both sides from 1 to 70 both inclusive, include also Mr Law's and Houses adjoining at the back thereof and Toll Gate house at Coopers Bank.

Commence at the top of Coopers Bank proceeding down Himley Road taking in all houses on right hand side and continue onward through Red Hall, Temple Street, taking in both sides of Temple Street to National Schools and those adjoining which include, also include all houses in East Street and West Street, The Garden Walk and the scattered houses near thereto.

Commence at Cooper's Bank Road taking in Houses on both sides from No 1 to 34 both inclusive, taking in Mr Fellow's House at Hunt's Mill and Houses in the road leading there (out of Coopers Bank Road) Take in Houses in Forge Road, Pensnett Road, then enter Cinder Road (out of Pensnett Road) taking in all Houses on right hand side of Cinder Road Continuing into Himley Road, taking in all Houses on right hand side of the last named Road to the top of starting point at Cooper's Bank. Include all Houses in Jevon's Fold.

Commence at Summer lane No 1 to 61 both inclusive (omitting the Parsonage House) thence to Abbey Street from 1 to 18 both inclusive, thence to Bird St and Gas St, thence to Musk Lane from 1 to 42 both inclusive.

Commence at Red Hall Road on right hand side (opposite Eli Bradleys') continuing into Himley Road on right hand side to Summit Place, continuing on right hand side to the bottom of Road to High Street (altered to Cock Street) proceeding on right hand side to Abbey Road, taking in both sides of Abbey Road, until arriving at Starting point, include all houses within the boundary specified, viz; Kettles Bank Road, Chapel Walk, Prices Road, Bull Street, Bank Street, Water Road and Prospect Road.
Notes:
'High Street altered to Cock Street' - which was later called Louise Street.

Boundary of Enumeration
Commence at Askew Bridge including Toll Gate House, proceeding up Himley Road taking in all Houses on left hand side to Summit Place, taking in all Houses on left hand side into Straits Road to the Brook which divides Lower Gornal Village from Cotwall End, continuing along the water course to the left until it enters Askew Bridge Pool, then leaving the Pool to the right - continue to Askew Bridge the starting point. Include all houses within the boundary on left hand side of Route including all Houses in Askew Bridge Road and Hop Yard Lane, and Houses scattered within the Boundary specified.

Commence at Heigh Street Gornal Wood at the Junction Inn (which include) then down Heigh Street taking all houses on right hand side, continuing to the bottom of Straits Road, takeing in all houses in the right hand side, continue up the Alley taking in all houses in Lower Gornal division at that place, being those numbered 7 to 15 both inclusive (taking care to exclude those in Cotwall End Village) continue up Lane to the Top of Musk Lane (exclude all houses numbered in Musk Lane) then pass at the back of the houses in Musk Lane into New Street, taking in all houses on both sides of New Street, also those in Wakelams Fold. Include all houses in the boundary specified except those in Abbey Street.

1871 Enumeration District: 6 Upper Gornal.
Enumerator: Mr Joseph H. Jenkins.
Boundary of Enumeration
Commence at Clarence Street No 1 to 21 both inclusive, taking in James Turley's, Jonathan Howels, and the Quarries House (Clarence Street) Tudor Place (which leads of Clarence St) from 1 to 9 both inclusive, thence to Sheepcotwall from 1 to 45 both inclusive. Thence to Spills Meadow from 1 to 21 both inclusive, thence to the Inhedge from 1 to 50 both inclusive, thence to Eve Lane commence at and take in the Parsonage and 2 houses of J.R. Cartwrights, 1 of Joseph Blackhams, and house No 6 Ann Perrys.
Include all Houses not numbered in the before defined district.

'Sheepcotwall' was the Dudley Road now called Kent Street.

Boundary of Enumeration
Commence at Mr H. Ballendens which include take in all houses to No 46 up Dudley Road, including Mr Hill the Vine Inn, J.C. Blews many houses, W.H. Haden, Joseph Caddick, W.M. Wilkes, and Mrs E. Tinsley, also any others not named herein within the boundary indicated. Thence to Mr H Fullwoods Horse Shoe Inn (which include) taking from No 6 to 113 both in Sheepcotwall, include all houses not numbered in that line of Route, on same side, thence to Dr A. Jones Clarence St to No 59 both inclusuve.
N.B. The houses from Mrs E Tinsley (included) to Toll Gate (included) are in the Ecclesiastical district of Sedgley, and will distinguish the same by the Letters (S.E) on the shedules, and enter them separately in your Book.

Boundary of Enumeration
Commence at Dibdale Lane from No 1 to 10 both inclusive taking in Isaac Naylors and Moses Hale's houses. Thence to Dibdale Street from 1 to 6 both inclusive. Thence to Shavers End or Cliff Street from 1 to 17 both inclusive which houses are in Sedgley Parish on Workhouse side of the Road. Thence continuing on same side of the Road to City Lane taking in all houses there from 1 to 10 both inclusive. Thence from Shaves End Toll Gate House which include taking in all houses on same side of the Road only to and include Miss E Cartwrights near the Horse Shoe Inn excluding the Union Workhouses. Thence to Jews Lane from 1 to 65 both inclusive. Thence from 1 to 5 Deepdale Lane both inclusive, also Waterfield's, Hickman's Wilkes house and J Ritson's Farm House.
