The sustained local team over a great period of time is Gornal Athletic F.C. A non-league side
which has had moderate success over the years.

In the early days of football, other teams sprang up in the district.
Gornal Wood Excelsior and Lower Gornal Victoria are covered on separate pages.
Football was a major interest for local miners; teams were often made up of miners
and sponsored by publicans, who were plentiful in the area.
Not much is known about these early teams except that their members
were made up of the local working men. These were principally miners who were hardy characters to say the least.
